China believes Iran will respond with understanding to the world community's concern over its nuclear program, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.
BEIJING, March 1 (RIA Novosti) - China believes Iran will respond with understanding to the world community's concern over its nuclear program, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

The Islamic Republic has been under extreme international pressure since it resumed uranium enrichment in January 2006, which some Western countries suspect is part of a covert nuclear weapons program.

Tehran has consistently denied the claims, insisting that its nuclear research is purely for electricity generation.

"We hope that in this situation, Iran will take these concerns into account," Qin Gang said, adding that for its part the international community should demonstrate "patience and composure," and work toward the early resumption of the negotiating process.

He said China is conducting "active consultations" in search of a solution to the Iranian nuclear problem.

He also said the upcoming meeting between U.S. and North Korean delegations at the six-nation talks on Korea's nuclear problem will help make progress.

Qin Gang said China hopes the sides will pool their efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and normalize bilateral relations.

The latest round of the six-nation talks on the Korean nuclear problem, involving North and South Korea, the U.S., Japan, China and Russia, was held February 8-13 in Beijing and ended with the adoption of a plan of initial steps on Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament.
