MOSCOW, March 22 (RIA Novosti) - Four international negotiators on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict have approved an initiative to extend aid to the Palestinians for another three months, a statement by the Quartet said.

The Quartet includes Russia, the UN, the European Union and the United States.

"The Quartet has confirmed the need to coordinate and mobilize international assistance to the Palestinian people and approved further international aid to the Palestinians for another three months," the statement published on Russia's Foreign Ministry site said.

"During this period, the Quartet will analyze the situation, and the international community will work to develop a mechanism for longer-term aid to the Palestinians," the statement said.

The Quartet said it respects Palestinian democracy and the agreement reached by the two basic political forces in Palestine, Fatah and Hamas, in Mecca February 8, which laid the foundation for reconciliation in PNA.

Palestine was on the brink of civil war as the country found itself torn between the Fatah movement, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, and the Islamist group Hamas, which won parliamentary elections in January 2006 and is regarded by the U.S. and Israel as a terrorist organization.

At a February 8 meeting in Mecca, Hamas and Fatah reached an agreement on the structure of a new power-sharing Cabinet. The agreement ended weeks of fighting between the opposing groups, in which over 90 people died on the both sides.

The intermediaries said they hope that the new coalition government formed March 17 will help cease violence in Palestine and support President Abbas's efforts aimed to achieve resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The Quartet also agreed to meet in the near future to discuss developments in the region.
