WARSAW, March 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Czech Republic has agreed to start official talks with the U.S. on missile defense deployment on its territory, the country's prime minister, Mirek Topolanek, said Wednesday.

Washington would like to deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic, saying the system will help protect the U.S. and its allies in Europe from an air strike by Iran, which the West suspects of trying to produce nuclear weapons.

Topolanek has spoken out in support of the initiative, saying it meets national interests and would reinforce the defense capability and raise the security of the country and of Europe as a whole.

The U.S. government asked the Czech Republic to start talks on missile defense radar deployment in January 2007.

A deputy Czech defense minister said the talks would begin soon and would be held until the end of 2007.

The opposition has demanded a referendum to decide the issue.

Russia sees the prospective deployment as a threat to its own national security, and fears the base may trigger a new arms race.
