Christie's picks up baton of Russian art sale

Following the unexpected success of a Russian art sale at Sotheby's, Christie's has put up Russian paintings for sale, a spokesman for the auction house said Wednesday.
NEW YORK, April 18 (RIA Novosti) - Following the unexpected success of a Russian art sale at Sotheby's, Christie's has put up Russian paintings for sale, a spokesman for the auction house said Wednesday.

Solomon's Wall by Vasily Vereshchagin, is the most expensive lot with a guide price of up to $5 million. The painting is the property of the University of California.

Among the "cheaper" Russian paintings is the famous Portrait of Emperor Paul I of Russia attributed to Dmitry Levitsky from the collection of Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. This painting is valued at $100,000-$150,000.

Two paintings by Nicholas Roerich, Sanctuaries and Citadels, and Grand Canyon, Arizona, each priced at $300,000-$400,000, will also go under the hammer.

The starting price of Russian Peasant Woman, a painting dated 1923 by Boris Grigoryev, and Three Dancers, study for Death of Petronius by Konstantin Makovsky are valued at $500,000 and $350,000 respectively.

The Russian art sale at Sotheby's in New York yielded $51 million on Monday and Tuesday, which equals almost their entire sales for 2006.
