SUKHUMI, April 24 (RIA Novosti) - The foreign minister of Georgia's self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia said Tuesday a resumption of negotiations with Tbilisi would be premature.

"When the Georgian side removes all obstacles that it has put in the way of a Georgian-Abkhazian settlement, then we could sit down and continue the negotiating process," Sergei Shamba said.

He said Georgia continues to ignore all previous agreements and accords that had been reached during the 13 years of negotiations under UN auspices and with Russia's participation.

Abkhazia's Foreign Ministry said last Monday it is satisfied with the new UN Security Council resolution on the Georgian-Abkhazian settlement, adopted April 13 in New York.

The UN Security Council extended the mandate for the UN mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) in the separatist-minded Georgian region until October 15.

Shamba told journalists that the new resolution was neutral to both parties in the conflict.

"We are glad that there is a constant reminder for Georgia to implement the previous UN Security Council resolution," he said.

The UN Security Council met to discuss the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict in the wake of Tbilisi's reports March 13 of artillery and helicopter shelling of three villages in the north of the Kodori Gorge, a territory in Abkhazia controlled by the central Georgian authorities.

The resolution also denounced the events of March 13, and the Security Council called on those involved to give full assistance in the investigation of the alleged incidents.

The session also focused on the implementation of Resolution 1716, adopted last October, urging Georgia to pull out of northern Kodori and ruling that the Russian peacekeeping mission in Abkhazia be extended until April 15.

The UN observer mission in Georgia consists of 142 military servicemen, and has been stationed in the conflict zone since 1993 to observe the ceasefire between Georgia and Abkhazia.

The Western-leaning Georgian authorities are seeking to replace Russian peacekeepers, who have been in Abkhazia since the early 1990s, with an international contingent. Georgia accuses the Kremlin of supporting its breakaway regions. Most Abkhazians hold Russian citizenship.
