TEHRAN, May 2 (RIA Novosti) - No decision has yet been made to hold a meeting between top Iranian and the U.S. diplomats in Egypt, an Iranian news agency said Wednesday.

The U.S. side, particularly Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, earlier voiced readiness to meet with Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki to discuss a wide range of issues at an international conference on Iraq in Sharm-el-Sheikh May 3-4.

"We are considering the opportunity to meet with Ms. Rice at the upcoming meeting on Iraq, but no final decision has been made in this regard," Mehr quoted Mottaki as saying.

The United States severed diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic in 1979 after radical Islamists stormed the U.S. Embassy in the country accusing the diplomatic mission of espionage and conspiracy against Iran. Fifty-two of the Embassy staff were held hostage for 444 days.

The U.S. is also a vehement opponent of Iran's nuclear program, which Washington suspects is a covert weapons program.

Iran, which has consistently claimed it pursues civilian nuclear power generation, announced last month it had started industrial production of nuclear fuel, thereby ignoring repeated sanctions the United Nations Security Council had imposed against Tehran.
