WASHINGTON, May 17 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. President George Bush said Thursday he and outgoing U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair will push together for new sanctions against Iran.

Peace in the world cannot be ensured with an Iran in possession of nuclear weapons, Bush said.

Iran has been under consistently tightened UN sanctions for the past year as it defiantly announced ever-higher degrees of uranium enrichment and new advances of its centrifuge technology, necessary to make nuclear weapons.

Tehran insists its pursuit of nuclear technology is peaceful.
