BEIJING, May 29 (RIA Novosti) - A former Chinese food and medical regulator has been handed a death sentence after being convicted Tuesday of corruption and abuse of office.

Zheng Xiaoyu, ex-director of the State Food and Drug Administration, was found guilty of taking over 6 million yuan (some $800,000) in bribes for licensing the production of untested pharmaceutical products.

The authorities are scrutinizing some 170,000 licenses granted by the official while in office until June 2005.

Zheng Xiaoyu can appeal the judgment in a higher court.
