KIEV, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - Ukrainian Interior Minister Vasyl Tsushko has been hospitalized after a heart attack, a national news agency reported Wednesday.

UNIAN Agency quoted Konstantin Stognyi, a spokesman for the ministry, as saying Tsushko is being kept at the Interior Ministry's hospital.

On Tuesday, Deputy Interior Minister Mykhailo Kornienko said that Tsushko was undergoing routine in-ward treatment at a hospital and would remain there for a little more than a week amid an ongoing political crisis in Ukraine.

Last Thursday, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko dismissed Svyatoslav Piskun, the country's top prosecutor, and Interior Minister Tsushko defied the president, sending in riot police to defend the prosecutor as he remained in his office while protestors gathered outside.

A presidential supporter, National Security Council Secretary Ivan Plyushch, condemned the interior minister's defiant actions as an attempted seizure of a national law enforcement body, while Viktor Shemchuk, appointed by the president as acting prosecutor, said he had launched criminal proceedings against the interior minister.

Tsushko, 44, was appointed interior minister December 1, 2006, and was previously a member of the Ukrainian Socialist Party.
