BRUSELLS, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - King Albert of Belgium, 73, who broke his right hip in a fall at his countryside residence, has successfully undergone surgery at Saint-Jean hospital in Brussels, Radio Contact said Wednesday.

The monarch fell at his residence outside Brussels late Tuesday, and will require several weeks to recuperate. However, Belgian RTBF TV channel said King Albert was likely to resume his monarchial duties very quickly.

King Albert's operation could have an impact on the country, in particular negotiations to form a new government, RTBF reported Wednesday. The accident occurred as Belgium's political parties are struggling to form a coalition government after a general election.

The king recently appointed francophone liberal party leader Didier Reynders to explore possible coalitions, a task he is due to complete this week, Agence France Presse said Tuesday.

A coalition of parties which won the June 10 poll in three Belgian regions - Yves Leterme's "Flemish cartel" of Christian Democrats and Reynders-led reformists - should form the Cabinet.

The latest reports said although the doctors recommended that the monarch spend another 48 hours in hospital, Radio Contact said King Albert would return to his duties Thursday.

In January 2000 the king underwent surgery on his spine. In 2002 he broke his ankle in a traffic accident, and in February 2006 underwent cataract surgery.
