EU to provide $40 million in humanitarian aid for Gaza

BRUSSELS, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union has allocated 30 million euros ($40.2 million) for humanitarian aid to violence-torn Gaza, the 27-nation bloc's executive body said Wednesday.

Of the funds, almost $14 million has been released from the EU's reserve for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, and will be spent on food aid, the European Commission said.

"We know the needs are increasing all the time. The problem now is providing secure access to those who are suffering. 30 million euros in supplies and funding from the EU are ready and waiting: give us the tools to get on with the job," EU Commissioner Louis Michel said.

Michel said urgent measures needed to be taken to prevent humanitarian aid declining in Gaza, isolated by sanctions and recently taken over by Islamist group Hamas in a violent coup.

"There are no grounds for a blockade of humanitarian aid. This must continue to be provided to the people in Gaza in the same way as for vulnerable groups in the West Bank - and in other crisis zones," the commissioner said.

The small Gaza Strip, a crowded enclave that is almost entirely dependent on Israel for electricity and water, is also heavily reliant on aid from the outside. This month's violence, including Hamas's overthrow of pro-presidential Fatah movement, has killed at least 115 people and injured hundreds more.
