BUENOS AIRES, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Thousands of people in Buenos Aires have witnessed the first snowfall in Argentina's capital since 1918 as the country celebrated its national Independence Day holiday.

Many Argentineans Monday called the snowfall "a gift of God," with many saying it was the first snow they had seen in their lives.

According to Argentina's National Weather Service, it was the first snowfall in Buenos Aires since June 22, 1918.

Traffic police have asked drivers to refrain from traveling and have imposed speed restrictions of 40 kilometers per hour (25 mph). Two deaths from exposure have been reported.

In May, the capital experienced freezing temperatures in the coldest snap in 40 years in Buenos Aires, killing 23 and provoking an energy crisis.
