Lines of goods vehicles jam Russian-Latvian border

RIGA, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - More than 1,300 trucks are stuck in queues on both sides of the Russian-Latvian border, a spokesman for the Latvian border guards said Thursday.

There are currently 960 goods vehicles idling at the Terekhovo-Burachki checkpoint, and a further 370 waiting in line at the Grebnevo-Ubilinka crossing, the spokesman said.

"The queue has now slightly increased, and a growth trend has been seen throughout this week," the spokesman said.

Severe blockages at the overcrowded crossings began in August 2006. Experts say they are caused by increased commodity trade between Russia and the European Union, which Latvia joined in 2004.

Belarus has also been partially blamed for the delays, after it introduced a truck transit fee last year, forcing commercial vehicles that normally traveled through the country to be rerouted through Latvia and Estonia.

In a bid to free up traffic flows, the Russian and Latvian transport ministries are considering building a new checkpoint near Vientuli, and plan to modernize existing checkpoints.
