LONDON, July 18 (RIA Novosti) - The Metropolitan Police officially confirmed Wednesday that a Russian man had been detained June 21 on suspicion of plotting to kill a prominent London-based Moscow critic, but released two days later without charge.
The Russian, arrested in central London after weeks of reported police surveillance, was eventually handed over to immigration authorities, Scotland Yard said.
U.K. authorities did not release this information before Wednesday. At a news conference hours ago, Berezovsky said, citing unspecified sources in the Metropolitan Police Service, that the suspected killer had been sent by the Kremlin and had already been deported from Britain.
Earlier on Wednesday, SkyNews also said the Russian had been deported.
