175 kg of mercury found in city dump in Urals

TYUMEN, September 10 (RIA Novosti) - A resident of the Russian city Berezniki, in the Urals, discovered seven cases containing a total of 175 kilograms (385 pounds) of mercury in a city dump, an emergency situations ministry spokesman said Monday.

"According to the woman, she and her husband came upon the cases unexpectedly. Inside the cases were a total of 25 flasks, each sealed with iron lids, full of a substance they supposed to be mercury," the spokesman said. The incident took place September 8.

The spokesman added there was no information indicating who owned the cases. It is estimated that each of the 25 flasks contained around seven kilograms (15 pounds) of mercury.

The flasks and their contents are currently being analyzed, and the results will be known Tuesday, the spokesman said.
