Porterfield, famous in his home country for the volley that brought then second-division Sunderland a shock victory in the 1973 FA final against hot favorites, Leeds, had an eventful career as a trainer.
After finishing his playing days at Sheffield Wednesday in 1979, he held a number of managerial posts in Britain, including a spell at Chelsea, before beginning the final, most exotic part of his footballing life.
Before taking over as the trainer for Armenia in April 2006, Porterfield had managed Zimbabwe, Zambia, Trinidad & Tobago and Oman, and had also worked in South Korean club football.
Porterfield had just begun to transform football in the former Soviet republic of Armenia, his side earning a shock 1-1 draw with 2002 World Cup semi-finalists Portugal in Yerevan last month.
Porterfield was diagnosed with colon cancer earlier this year, and had an operation in Armenia in March.
He died in Scotland, where he was being treated, and is survived by a wife and a daughter.
