WARSAW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - Poland's ambassador to Iraq, General Edward Pietrzyk, was injured in an explosion in Baghdad on Wednesday, a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry said.

Robert Szaniawski denied media reports that the diplomat was in a serious condition, saying the general had left the car, which presumably ran onto a mine, on his own. The general's bodyguard is reported to have died of injuries in a U.S. military hospital.

Information about other casualties is currently unavailable.

Reuters News Agency, citing local police sources, earlier said that three embassy cars had been blown up by roadside bombs in the Arasat district of the Iraqi capital. Eyewitnesses said one local resident was killed and five injured.

Poland supported the U.S.-led military operation in Iraq in 2003, and currently has no plans to reduce its military contingent, estimated at approximately 900 people.
