Syria denies media reports on nuclear cooperation with N. Korea

DAMASCUS, October 25 (RIA Novosti) - Syria's prime minister has denied recent allegations by the Israeli media that his country is cooperating with North Korea in the development of nuclear and missile technology.

Some Israeli media sources reported that the Israeli Air Force successfully attacked in early September a secret nuclear facility in Syria, which they said was developing nuclear technology together with specialists from North Korea. Syrian authorities denied the reports saying Israeli missiles hit an "unused military facility" and caused no serious damage.

"The rumors have been deliberately fabricated by Israel to justify its recent act of aggression against Syria," Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Al-Otari said at a press conference in Damascus.

Some western media speculated that the reason for Israel's intrusion of Syrian air space by combat aircraft was to destroy the alleged joint Syrian-North Korean nuclear facility.

Mohammad Naji Al-Otari said that the whole information is a "false campaign thought up by Israel."

The talks on North Korea's nuclear disarmament have continued for over three years. North Korea successfully conducted nuclear bomb tests last October.

In a six-party deal sealed earlier this month by South and North Korea, the U.S., China, Russia and Japan, - Pyongyang committed to disclose and disable its nuclear program by the end of the year, in exchange for 950,000 metric tons of heavy fuel oil or its equivalent.
