NEW DELHI, November 7 (RIA Novosti) - A two-year-old Indian girl born with four arms and four legs is in a stable condition after a difficult 27-hour operation to remove her extra limbs, doctors said on Wednesday. (Video)

The girl, called Lakshmi after the Hindu four-armed goddess of wealth, was born attached to a parasitic twin which ceased developing in the mother's womb. The surviving fetus absorbed the limbs, kidneys and other body parts of the undeveloped fetus.

"Lakshmi is doing fine and her condition is stable," the Hindustan Times quoted the chief coordinator of the Sparsh Hospital in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, Dr. Mamata Patil, as saying.

A team of 36 doctors performed the complex surgery during which Lakshmi's pelvic ring was rebuilt and her two kidneys saved, a hospital official, quoted by the newspaper, said.

The girl is revered by some in her remote village in the northern state of Bihar as the reincarnation of the Hindu goddess she was born resembling.

The next 48 to 72 hours are critical and doctors will monitor Lakshmi, who is currently in intensive care, Patil said.

Without this operation, doctors said, Lakshmi's chances of surviving beyond early adolescence would have been severely curtailed.
