KIEV, December 7 (RIA Novosti) - Europe-bound gas transit has been suspended along an international pipeline damaged by an explosion in central Ukraine, national television reported on Friday.

Channel 5 quoted the Emergencies Ministry as saying that the blast occurred on Thursday night. A section of the Urengoi-Pomary-Uzhgorod pipeline burst into flames in the Vinnytsia Region.

The pipeline pumps Russian gas to Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and France via Ukraine.

The fire has been put out, and no casualties have been reported.

The last accident to occur on the pipeline was in May, when the pipe was ruptured in the Kiev Region, presumably due to sinking ground. Gas transit was not interrupted.
