Hundreds of Afghan women pray for peace

KABUL, December 13 (RIA Novosti) - At least 1,000 women took to the streets of Afghanistan on Thursday to pray for the end of almost 30 years of continuous war.

"Women from six Afghanistan cities simultaneously let forth a mother's cry, symbolizing that we are sick and tired of killings and deaths," Rangina Hamidi, one of the organizers, told reporters.

Hundreds of women knelt on prayer rugs to recite passages from the Koran.

The 'Women's National Peace Prayer' was an unusual and dangerous step for Afghan woman to take in a country until recently ruled by the hard-line Islamic Taliban, and where women still face death threats for entering the political process.

"They were risking their lives," Hamidi said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai recently said at a ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that, "There is not a single Afghan family which has not suffered from war."

The event's organizers now plan to repeat the 'Peace Prayer' in other Afghan provinces.
