MOSCOW, December 17 (RIA Novosti) - Starting January 1, 2008 Russia's agricultural watchdog will hand full control to the Latin American country for Brazilian meat exports to Russia, the agency said on Monday.

"Starting at the New Year all responsibility for the security and quality of Brazilian meat products exported to Russia will rest with Brazil's veterinary service," Rosselkhoznadzor watchdog said in a news release.

Last year Brazil's share in Russian beef imports was estimated at 40%, pork - at 37% and poultry - at 15%.

Alexei Alekseyenko, a spokesman for Rosselkhoznadzor, said Russian authorities would assist Brazil to establish a system of control over its meat products intended for export.

"The measures will help to increase the responsibility of Brazil's veterinary service," he said. "We will monitor imported products here, on our [Russian] territory and the supervision will be more thorough."

The agricultural watchdog also said in the news release that the Brazilian veterinary service should work out a control mechanism by the end of the year and draw up a list of Brazilian companies permitted to export meat products to Russia.

The news release also said that Sergei Dankvert, the head of the service, had proposed to his Brazilian counterparts that they attend in mid-January a bilateral working group in Moscow to draft a document regulating the terms and conditions to ensure Brazil's meat quality and supplies.
