French police ban Lewis Hamilton for speeding

PARIS, December 18 (RIA Novosti) - French police nabbed British Formula One star, Lewis Hamilton, for speeding on a motorway near the northern town of Laon on Sunday, French media said Tuesday.

Hamilton, who was caught driving at a speed of 196 kilometers per hour (122 mph), exceeded the speed limit by nearly 64 km/ph (40 mph).

He received a mandatory on the spot fine of 600 euros ($860), his driving license was suspended for a month and his Mercedes impounded.

"He was very polite and cooperative," a police spokesman said.

The 22 year-old Formula One rookie, became a sensation after finishing his first nine races of the season on podium and having led the driver's championship for the most of the season. He finished the season runner up to the current World Champion, Ferrari's Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen.
