British Royal Family 'blackmailers' appear at Old Bailey

LONDON, December 20 (RIA Novosti) - Two men accused of blackmailing an unnamed member of the British Royal Family will appear at the Old Bailey on Thursday, the Central Criminal Court in London said.

The two men who were caught in a sting operation after attempting to extort 50,000 pounds ($100,000), threatening to release compromising tapes of a member of the Royal Family if their demands were not met. The recordings reportedly relate to illegal drugs and gay sex.

Ian Strachan, 30, and Sean McGuigan, 40, from London were arrested by police on September 11, and are currently being held on remand.

The target of the threats cannot be named for legal reasons. The royal household said in a statement that the victim did not know the accused. However, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the victim, who is not expected to give evidence in court, is not a senior member of the Royal Family.

If found guilty the defendants could face up to 14 years in prison.
