* A dispute between Russia and Estonia over the removal of a Soviet war memorial from central Tallinn continues, with Moscow referring the case to the UN and the Baltic state seeking protection from the European Commission

May 10

* Britain's Tony Blair resigns as the leader of the ruling Labour Party, and says he will quit the post of prime minister at the end of next month

* The Czech Republic opens talks with the U.S. on hosting part of Washington's missile shield in Central Europe

May 11

* North and South Korea sign a deal to test a railway through the trans-Korean railroad on May 17 for the first time in 56 years

May 15

* Russian President Vladimir Putin meets with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at the presidential residence near Moscow. Putin and Rice agree to look for a mutually satisfactory solution to the Kosovo problem, while the Russian leader reiterates Russia's position on U.S. plans to deploy missile defense elements in Central Europe

* Russia and Austria agree to open a large natural gas storage facility with a holding capacity of 2.4 billion cubic meters near Salzburg, in western Austria, during a visit by Russia's President Vladimir Putin

* A methane explosion at the Yubileinaya coal mine in West Siberia leaves 38 dead and seven injured

* Polish TV channel TVP1 reports the United States will deploy a missile defense base on the Baltic Sea coast in Poland, as official talks on the deployment of U.S. missile shield elements in Central Europe between the United States and Poland continue

* North Korea launches several short-range missiles towards the Sea of Japan, Japan's Kyodo news agency says, citing U.S. spy satellite photos obtained by sources "close to Japan-U.S. relations"
