CAIRO, December 27 (RIA Novosti) - Rescuers have pulled out three more bodies from under a collapsed 12-storey building in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, bringing the number of victims to 22, national media said on Thursday.

The death toll is likely to climb further, as around a dozen people still remain under the wreckage of the residential building.

The building caved in on Monday morning after the majority of residents had left for work.

Three people have been pulled out of the rubble alive so far, all of them in the immediate 24 hours following the catastrophe.

The seven-storey residential building was built some 25 years ago without planning permission. The building's owner later secured a permit, but then illegally added a further five floors to the apartment block. The building was recently declared to be unsafe, and had been scheduled for demolition.

Prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for the building's owner and council officials following the collapse of the building.

Safety violations have been the cause of numerous recent building collapses in Egypt. In November 2006, seven people died following the collapse of a four-storey building in the city of Mansura in northern Egypt. A year earlier, the illegal addition of three floors to a residential building in Alexandria left 19 dead.
