TASHKENT, December 28 (RIA Novosti) - Islam Karimov has been reelected for another term as president of Uzbekistan winning the presidential elections held on December 23, a spokesman for the country's Central Election Commission said Friday.

Karimov, 69, who has ruled Uzbekistan for 18 years, has been reelected for another seven-year presidential term in the Central Asian Republic.

"Karimov received 88.1% of the votes," the spokesman said.

Turnout was high at 90.6% with 13 million voters casting their ballot.

The second and third placed candidates received a mere 3.17% and 2.94% of the vote.

The ex-Soviet country's main sources of revenue are exports of cotton, oil, natural gas and gold.

Although the standard of living there remains very low, the economy has seen strong growth in recent years.
