Some 100 couples from across the country took part in the mass wedding. The ceremony was held at a cinema studio site equipped with leftover decorations from historical films, adding a 'traditional' flavor to the event.
Chinese weddings usually involve numerous symbolic preparations and rituals, including the remembrance of ancestors and shows of respect for elders and the family members of the bride and groom.
On their wedding day, the bride and a groom wear red, the traditional color of happiness and joy. Chinese symbols such as a dragon and a phoenix are prevalent. The dress must not include any white coloring, as white is the color of death and funerals in China.
However, many elements of traditional-style weddings, particularly the habit of addressing the newly-weds as "Empress and Emperor", have been left out at marriage ceremonies since China became a communist state.
