CAIRO, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - A 29-year-old Egyptian woman decided to sell her kidney to pay off her dead husband's debts, the Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper said.

Khanad's husband died soon after taking out a 25,000 Egyptian pound ($4,500) loan to buy a large batch of household appliances. The unemployed woman was left with two small children and no way to pay back the money.

The widow first turned to the man's business partners, but they refused to help her.

Desperate, Khanad went to a private clinic and offered her kidney for sale. Doctors at the clinic promised to pay her the exact sum she needed to pay off all her debts and she agreed. The operation is due to take place soon.

In mid-January, another Egyptian woman brought charges against her husband, accusing him of drugging her and selling one of her kidneys on the black market.

In February 2007 the Daily Times of Pakistan reported that a man in the city of Multan in the country's Punjab province had sold his wife's kidney in order to purchase a tractor.
