"Russia is closely observing developments in Pakistan following the February 18 parliamentary election," spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said.
"We hope the new government will be able to resolve tasks of vital importance - strengthening, and making more effective, the fight against Pakistan's main threat - terrorism - as well as creating the socio-economic conditions necessary to strengthen national security," he said.
Monday's election was won by two parties that had been in opposition - the Pakistan People's Party formerly led by former prime minister Benazir Bhutto killed in December, and the Pakistan Muslim League led by another ex-premier, Nawaz Sharif. They gained 153 out of 272 seats in parliament. The pro-presidential Quaid-i-Azam Pakistan Muslim League won 38 seats.
The Russian official also said: "We hope the political forces that gained a majority in parliament will reach an agreement to form a broad coalition."
