AUCKLAND, February 26 (RIA Novosti) - A German tourist spent a day and a half cleaning graffiti from a world famous glacier in New Zealand after he was caught red handed defacing the rocks, the NZPA said Tuesday.

British tourists photographed Jan Philip Scharbert, 28, from Munich, last week as he was spray-painting the 12 kilometer (7.4 mile) long Franz Josef Glacier located on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island.

The photos were later handed to conservation staff, who informed the police.

Scharbert was arrested as he got on a bus to leave the site. He was ordered to clean up the graffiti and spent a day and a half chipping the paint off the rocks with an ice pick, while passing visitors and guides reprimanded him.

The officials said they were satisfied with the cleanup, and the German tourist escaped criminal damage charges.
