Ukraine, EU agree to extend cooperation action plan

KIEV, March 11 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine and the EU agreed to extend by a year an Ukraine-EU action plan initially expected to run from 2005-2007, the Ukrainian government said Tuesday, citing premier Yulia Tymoshenko in Brussels.

"Yulia Tymoshenko reported that an agreement to extend the Action Plan for the maximum possible period - one year - was reached, after which a new general document aimed at reinforcing cooperation between Ukraine and the EU will be signed," the government said.

Ukraine is currently aiming for admission to the EU. EU membership enjoys greater popularity among Ukrainians than the prospect of entering NATO, but the EU is not yet seriously considering Ukraine as a member.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko hopes the new cooperation agreement, to be signed in September, will include a clause concerning associated membership of the EU for the former Soviet republic.
