WASHINGTON, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - U.S. space shuttle Endeavour touched down in Florida after a 16-day trip to deliver part of a Japanese research lab and a Canadian robot to the International Space Station.

NASA said the shuttle landed at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 8:39 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (00:39 GMT Thursday) just after sunset, "bringing the STS-123 mission to a flawless end."

The landing was slightly delayed due to cloud cover over Florida, and the shuttle made an additional orbit of the Earth before entering the atmosphere.

Endeavour was launched on March 11, also at nighttime, to deliver the first pressurized component of Japanese space agency JAXA's Kibo lab. The main part of the laboratory is set to be delivered in May.

During the mission, astronauts made five spacewalks to attach the module and assemble Canada's Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator robot, or Dextre, which will help maintain the ISS.

Japanese astronaut Takao Doi, one of the seven crew members returning in the shuttle, had worked with other astronauts to attach the research lab.

JAXA vice president Kaoru Mamiya told NASA: "We are quite honored that Mr. Doi contributed to the construction of the space station. It's the first step for our Kibo construction, and we hope that next time, the main module will be added to the station."

French flight engineer Leopold Eyharts returned with the shuttle after spending seven weeks in the orbital station. Eyharts was replaced on the ISS by U.S. Astronaut Garrett Reisman.
