BEIJING, May 29 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll from China's powerful earthquake that devastated the southwest province of Sichuan on May 12 has risen to 68,516, a spokesman for the country's State Council said on Thursday.

The official statement said 365,399 people had been injured in the disaster, and 19,300 are listed as missing. Over 45.5 million have been affected by the earthquake.

Wednesday's reports said 68,109 people had been killed. Chinese authorities expect the final death toll to exceed 80,000.

The quake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale according to the China Seismological Bureau, was the worst to hit the country in more than three decades, and affected eight provinces, with Sichuan suffering the bulk of the devastation. Around 80% of buildings were destroyed in some areas.

Rescuers are still facing difficulties reaching all the affected quake regions.

Forty people in the village of Yangjiakou stranded on a remote mountainside in Sichuan for 16 days were airlifted to safety on Wednesday. They had virtually no food and had been eating reserves of rice mixed with local wild herbs.

At least another 700,000 people are under threat from flash floods as some 69 dams and reservoirs are in danger of bursting their banks. Heavy rains and mudslides have also blocked rivers and created 'quake lakes' which is adding to the burden on rescue workers amid fears of massive flooding and further devastation to an already traumatized population.
