MEXICO, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - About 35,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in Nicaragua since the tropical storm Alma hit the Central America's Pacific Coast, media in nearby Mexico reported on Friday.

Alma made landfall on Thursday, leaving the former Nicaraguan capital Leon without electricity and causing flooding in parts of the city.

Over 10,000 people living in the capital Managua, next to Lake Managua, will be evacuated if the situation deteriorates.

Nicaraguan civil defense chief Mario Perez-Cassar said over 3,000 servicemen and Red Cross personnel have been deployed in the worst-hit areas, including Leon and Chinandega, on the border with Honduras.

Alma, the first tropical storm of this hurricane season, has brought heavy rains throughout Central America. With sustained winds of 100 kmph (62 mph) it also threatens Honduras and Guatemala.
