BRUSSELS/MOSCOW, June 5 (RIA Novosti) - A nuclear power plant in Slovenia has been shut down for several days after a water coolant leak occurred Wednesday evening, EU officials said, adding there is no danger to the environment or people.

The European Commission reported a leak of coolant in the primary cooling system at the Krsko nuclear plant, jointly built and owned by Slovenia and neighboring Croatia, citing an alert message from Slovenia.

"This nuclear incident poses no threat whatsoever to Europeans," Ferran Tarradellas, European Commission spokesman for energy, said adding the commission was in contact with Slovenia, but had no immediate plans to send specialists to the facility.

The commission said in a statement the reactor had been completely shut down to determine the causes of the malfunction and rectify it.

"The relatively small leakage remained within the containment building," the commission said adding that the Slovenian authorities confirmed there has been no discharge to the environment.

"The situation can be considered fully under control," Slovenia authorities said.

Tarradellas said European officials passed this information to all EU states "for the sake of transparency" and as part of standard procedures via an early warning system, the European Community Urgent Radiological Information Exchange (ECURIE), used in the event of a radiological or nuclear accident.
