BUENOS AIRES, June 16 (RIA Novosti) - Eight people were killed and 29 injured when a bus fell into a ravine near Bucaramanga in northeast Colombia, traffic police said on Monday.

The bus, carrying 35 passengers and two drivers, crashed into the mountain on the side of the road, skidded to the opposite side of the highway, and hurtled down the 200-meter (660-foot) side of a ravine.

Both drivers and six passengers, including a 12 year-old girl, died instantly. Four passengers are being treated in hospital with severe injuries.

Traffic police said the crash was believed to have been caused by excessive speed combined with technical failure.

According to official statistics, over 5,000 people die annually in car accidents in the South American country.
