RIGA, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - Latvian President Valdis Zalters could visit Russia this September, the head of the Latvian parliament's foreign affairs committee said on Tuesday.

Latvian Ambassador to Russia Andris Teikmanis announced last week that Zalters was planning to visit Russia during fall.

"The Latvian president is likely to pay a state visit to Russia in September. However, the two countries' foreign ministries will have to carry out a large amount of work for this," Andris Berzins said.

Bilateral trade between Russia and the ex-Soviet Baltic state, which joined the European Union four years ago, exceeded $3 billion last year.

Zalters was elected head of state last year to replace the country's first female president and outspoken critic of Russia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
