Arab ministers criticize ICC charges against Sudan president

13:42 20/07/2008
CAIRO, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Arab League criticized the demand by the International Criminal Court to seek the arrest of Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir on genocide charges, saying the move was unacceptable.

Arab foreign ministers held a one-day emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday to focus on the charges brought against the president of Sudan.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo on Monday accused Bashir of being behind attacks on three ethnic groups in the west Sudanese region of Darfur and requested an arrest warrant on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

"The League of Arab States expresses its full solidarity with Sudan in confronting schemes that undermine its sovereignty, unity and stability," a joint resolution of the 22-nation body said after the emergency meeting.

According to the resolution, any legal issues related to Darfur were the competence of the Sudanese judiciary.

According to UN estimates, some 300,000 people have died in the conflict in Darfur since 2003 and more than two million people have fled their homes.
