KIEV, July 30 (RIA Novosti) - Emergency service officials in flood-hit western Ukraine said on Wednesday that water levels in a number of rivers were slowly subsiding.

At least 30 people, including six children, were killed in the worst storms to hit the area for over a century on July 23-27. Dozens of people are still missing and thousands have been evacuated from the region. Some 38,000 houses remained partially submerged by flood waters.

The Ukrainian emergencies ministry said that water levels in the Prut, Dniestr and Seret rivers had decreased by one to two meters.

Some 655 settlements and over 57,000 hectares of farmland were washed out in the floods. The Ivano-Frankivsk Region was the most seriously hit.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko declared on Monday a three-month state of emergency in western Ukraine.

The government has announced plans to pay a total of $30 million in compensation to the victims of the floods. Ukraine is also set to request emergency aid from the international community.
