WASHINGTON, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - At least 13 people were killed in a bus crash in the U.S. state of Texas on Friday, a police spokesman said.

The charter bus carrying 55 people crashed in the city of Sherman, north of Dallas, smashing into a guard rail on a bridge and ending up on its side on an embankment.

Many other passengers were injured, some of them seriously, medics said. Eleven helicopters and numerous ambulances took the injured people to several hospitals.

The passengers were members of a Vietnamese church group on their way to a festival in Carthage, Missouri.

The cause of the crash is being investigated, although police said the bus may have blown a tire.
