CAIRO, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group began negotiations with officials in Cairo on Monday, kicking off a new round of Palestinian peace negotiations that will involve rival groups Fatah and Hamas later this week.

Islamic Jihad leaders arrived in Egypt on Sunday.

The Palestine Liberation Front is also set to attend the negotiations.

Liberation Front spokesman Daoud Shahab said Egypt, in its role as a mediator, expects his group to be a key player in the talks, as it has the confidence of both Fatah and Hamas.

Egyptian mediators will hold separate talks with each group, followed by a general meeting.

The Gaza Strip has been controlled by Hamas since June last year, leaving Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in charge of only the West Bank. Fatah and Hamas have been bitterly divided since then.
