JAKARTA, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.6 hit Indonesia on Tuesday, prompting the meteorological service to declare a tsunami alert.

The quake struck at 10:07 a.m. (03:07 GMT) with an epicenter 20 kilometers (12 miles) under the seabed, 125 kilometers (about 78 miles) northwest of Ujungkulon in the West Java province, the national Meteorological and Geophysics Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Indonesia is a sprawling archipelago located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where two continental plates meet. The area, encircling the basin of the Pacific Ocean, has frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Indonesia was the worst-hit by the giant December 2004 earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 225,000 people in 11 countries.
