MEXICO CITY, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - A boy who weighed just 440 grams (15.5 ounces) at birth has survived after receiving medical treatment in a Mexican hospital, local health officials said.

"This is a unique case when we managed to save the life of a baby who spent less than 29 weeks in his mother's womb, and was born weighing 440 grams," a spokesman for the local social security institute said.

The boy, named Juarez, currently weights 2 kg and will be soon discharged from hospital, after spending almost three months in an incubator since his birth on May 29.

Doctors said the baby also suffered from asthma and lack of oxygen. The parents have called the boy's survival a miracle.

Over 97,000 children in Mexico are born prematurely, according to the institute.

The world's smallest surviving premature baby, Rumaisa Rahman, was born in Chicago in 2005 weighing 243 grams (8.6 ounces).
