MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - The Chinese government has waived tuition fees for pupils at schools throughout the country for the nine-year compulsory education period, the state Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.
From the start of the fall semester, over 28 million urban school pupils will benefit from the change announced by the Chinese Education Ministry, the agency said. Fees had already been cancelled for rural schools.
Tuition fees for compulsory education had until now reached less than $100 per year, but were still a burden for low-income Chinese families.
Families will still have to pay for schoolchildren's textbooks and uniforms.
