ATHENS, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - The Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders restarted direct talks on the island's reunification on Wednesday, state media reported.
Progress on the issue has stalled since Greek Cypriots rejected a UN-proposed reunification plan in 2004.
The negotiations between Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are taking place in the buffer zone within the capital, Nicosia, dividing the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.
Talat said last month that the standoff will be resolved by the end of the year.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded the north in response to a military coup on the island that was backed by Athens. The Northern Cypriot state is recognized only by Turkey.
