TEHRAN, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - Iran does not aim to possess nuclear weapons, a spokesman for the Islamic Republic said Friday.

"There is no place for nuclear weapons in Iran's defense doctrine," Hassan Qashqavi said while commenting on a recent statement by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Sarkozy, while on a visit to Syria on Wednesday, accused Tehran of carrying out work to create nuclear weapons. However, he said Iran had the right to peaceful nuclear power.

Qashqavi said that, "Iran, along with many other countries, is in favor of nuclear disarmament and the elimination of the nuclear arsenals of those states that possess them."

Western countries suspect Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons program, but the country says it needs nuclear power solely for civilian purposes.
