MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - A massive relief operation is under way in Texas after damage and flooding brought by Hurricane Ike, and five people have died in the island city of Galveston, local media reported.

The Austin American-Statesman said a body had been found in a submerged car near the airport in Galveston. The paper put the total death toll across seven states at 25.

Ike made landfall in Texas on Saturday, hitting Galveston at full-strength before moving on to Houston. On Sunday the storm weakened to a tropical depression, but torrential rains continued in Arkansas, Missouri and Indiana.

A weeklong curfew has been imposed in Houston, and thousands of people have been evacuated from flooded streets. Extensive damage in the U.S. oil capital sparked fears of a fuel crisis, but most refineries are reportedly undamaged.

Ten oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico were damaged on Saturday as the storm approached the U.S. coast.

At least 4 million people in Texas remain without electricity and water supplies. Emergency food and water have been brought in by fleets of trucks in the largest relief operation in the state's history. Around 2,000 people have been rescued from flooded areas.

Officials say it may take up to a month to restore electricity and water supplies, as well as repair damaged power and communication lines.

Before reaching the United States, Ike claimed at least 82 lives in the Caribbean, mainly in Haiti, where more than 70 died.ore reaching the U.S.ore
