Seven people, including four police officers, were killed and 18 injured when a suicide bomber on a motorbike crashed into a police convoy on patrol in the town of Spin Boldak, near the Pakistani border on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, in the provincial capital of Kandahar, a group of armed men on motorbikes opened fire on a vehicle carrying Lt.-Col. Malalai Kakar, the head of the city's department of crimes against women. Kakar was killed, while her son, who was behind the wheel, was seriously injured.
The 41 year-old mother of six had previously survived a number of assassination attempts. While fighting off a previous attempt on her life, she shot three attackers dead.
In addition, two foreign servicemen were injured in a militant attack on a Canadian outpost in the same province.
An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) convoy was also ambushed in the western Afghani province of Farah. No deaths or injuries among servicemen were reported, although 10 militants were killed when ISAF forces returned fire.
Also on the same day, six armed militants were killed by police in the northern Balkh province. A source in the country's Defense Ministry said four French servicemen were injured in a militant attack in the eastern province of Kapisa.
The Taliban were ousted from power in Afghanistan after a U.S.-led military operation in 2001.
