The Boeing 777-200, heading from Sao Paulo to Seoul with a stopover in Los Angeles, suffered turbine engine failure after it hit the bird, and requested an emergency landing.

The type of vulture encountered by the plane, an American black vulture, weighs 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs) and has a wingspan of 1.5 m (5 ft).
